In doing the “out of the box” activity I learned how I am different from my classmates. Perhaps the most dramatic difference is geographical. I learned from the activity that most of my classmates are from southern Georgia, and all are from southern states. Being from Maine is quite different from being from Georgia. I also noticed that many of my classmates enjoy music and many enjoy sports. Although I occasionally listen to music, it is not a big part of my life. Sports are something which I have no interest in. I also noticed that many of my classmates are “enjoying the single life,” whereas I am settled in a relationship. The differences between my classmates and I will affect me as a teacher in terms of appropriate grade levels. I see myself as working better with young children, whereas some of my classmates seem better suited to work with older children and young adults. Being that I have lived in the north and south will affect my teaching, also. It has given me perspectives on how geography affects people and how different regions have different styles of teaching. Having lived in both places gives me unique perspectives on everything from children’s basis of knowledge to politics. Knowing how I am different from my classmates will help me when I teach because it will remind me that just because I’m interested in a certain thing, doesn’t mean my students will be. Likewise, my students may have interests that I know nothing about and I will need to learn what they are in order to draw them in and teach effectively.

This is a picture of my "out of the box" activity in which I chose six items which represent me as a person. I chose a wisk because I love to cook, a pen because I am very studious and academic, a cross because I am a Christian, a seashell because I am from Maine, and a picture of my fiance and I because he has a major impact on my life, and scrapbooking scissors because scrapbooking is my hobby.
