As a college student I've spent the last few years seriously considering what it is I want to do with my life. After all, students are asked from the time they enter High School where they want to go to college and what they want to major in. I've wanted to be a teacher for about eight years now. Looking back it's not hard to see why: I've had some amazing teachers myself who helped to shape me into the student I am today. Trite though it may sound, I want to do the same. I want to teach because I want to instill in children the same love of learning which was shown to me so many years ago.
As for my personal life I am 19 years old and have been in college for two years. I am from Maine but have been attending college in Georgia. I decided to move to Georgia because I thought college would be an excellent opportunity to see a new perspective of the world, and why not go all the way. Although I miss my family I have thoroughly enjoyed seeing the world from a different place, both geographically and metaphorically.
My core values, as related to teaching and learning, and to some extent life in general, are authenticity and integrity. I feel that authenticity is important in life because who you are impacts everything you do, and if you're not being authentic, your endeavors will fall short of their potential. Likewise, if you are dealing with people who are authentic, you have the opportunity to develop deeper relationships, whereas it is difficult to really know people who are not their authentic selves. I feel that integrity is important because it encompasses so many positive qualities. To have integrity shows that a person is willing and able to do what it takes to succeed without compromising their values. I want to teach children that being authentic and having integrity will help them succeed in life. I hope to teach these values by example.
I feel that my legal, ethical, and professional responsibilities as a teacher are all similar. On the most basic level, I have a responsibility to teach all children in my classroom and provide them with the best information I can while ensuring that they are safe in all regards. More than just teaching students the information they must know to move on to the next grade, I want to teach them to love learning.
